Tyler Colt Interview

Tyler Colt
Tyler Colt is a young Rock Pop singer/songwriter with a musical background in guitar, bass, and drums. This multi-faceted experience, all before finishing high school, brings a unique view to his music. While he has acted in movies, TV, commercials, and music videos, his passion is music. Tyler was five when he began taking lessons from Garrett Gri ffin. He has also studied with Dave Topps, until he began teaching himself. Once he met Monty Pittman, guitarist for Madonna and Ministry. Pittman reignited Tyler’s passion for guitar.

While he enjoys all genres of music, Tyler’s passion is rock. His in uences include Slash, Jimi Hendrix, and Dave Grohl. “[Grohl] seems to be a really positive guy. He’s been through so much watching his friend and band mate Kurt Cobain pass away and still he’s got a great outlook on like. [These] life experiences [have shaped] some fantastic songs [with] the Foo Fighters. I hope to meet him one day… He’s proven you can do anything you put your mind to.”

Tyler has had the opportunity to play numerous venues with his band, including the famous Whiskya-GoGo in Hollywood, The Progressive Motorcycle Show, The Lobster Festival at Redondo Beach, and The Long Beach Convention Center. Growing up, he learned that he could express himself through music, and has learned that confidence is important. “My guitar lets me be free. It allows me to express myself through music. I used to be a little shy, but realized that being shy sucks. Being shy doesn’t let you experience things in life. … If you have confidence in life you can do anything. People should like you for you, if they don’t then move on, forget about it. You’re unique; you’re you, you should be proud to be you. Don’t try to be someone else, they’re already taken. Being you is empowering and awesome.”

Even though Tyler realizes that there are parts of life he has yet to experience, he has experiences that many his age can relate to. “I write my songs about what I’ve experienced so far in life. … My song
“Back to the Start” [is] about a time in my life when I was heartbroken, like most young teens go through. But this song is to get you to realize that you can go back to the start, in a good way, a fresh start. I hope everyone likes it and sees that while it might not be easy, you can have a fresh start tomorrow.”

“I want to continue to write, record & produce my songs. I’d like to play out at different venues. Like I said, sitting out and not being a part of things is boring. I want to get people moving and having fun. Life is supposed to be lived, why not start today. Everyday is a new opportunity to get a fresh start.”

HERE IS THE INTERVIEW WITH TYLER COLT:

Where are you from?

Los Angeles, California

How long have you been making music?

About 2 yrs. Playing for about 12 years, started singing a few years ago and put out my first song Aug. 2, 2015

How many songs /albums have you released to date?

I have released 3 singles to date, I have a new single coming out in May, of this year, 2016 called “Come Home” along with a cover song “Take Me Home Tonight” originally by Eddie Money, also coming out in May or June.

Can you tell us about your latest release and the background/inspirations behind it?
My latest song “A New Day” is about seizing the moment, diving in head first no matter what obstacles you may be given, don’t give up until the end. That each new day is another chance to start again, do or be something great.  I wanted to make the baseball team when I was a Freshman, I thought about it, procrastinated, and finally put my mind to it and tried out. I made it and it made me realize, that if you don’t just go for it you don’t know what the possibilities are. You could be very happy with the outcome, but doing nothing won’t get you anywhere. You have to take every day, every moment and seize the opportunity, no matter how hard or how impossible it may seem, just go for it.

How have you ended up in the music industry?

I’ve loved music since I was a little kid, playing guitar when I was 5. I always saw myself doing something in music. When I met my teacher (2015) Monty Pittman, (Guitarist for Madonna & Ministry)  he really re-ignited my passion for music. He made me feel powerful and that I wanted to share my songs with everyone. So one thing led to another and before I knew it, I was in the studio putting down vocal tracks for a song I co-wrote with friend Jared Farnes.

What do you think of the music industry in 2016?

Like any business it seems a little difficult and you need to keep pushing forward, perfecting your craft. There’s lots of talented people out there trying to get their songs out.  But I love the fact that you can produce a single yourself and get it out there for people to hear & social media makes that possible. You’re fans support you and love you. It’s the best feeling and support group.
Record companies are in the business to make money. They have their formulas an know what sells.
I’m juggling high school and making music and my time is limited, so right now this is good for me, being independent, I mean.

Who do you think the most influential artist?

I think the most influential artist are the musicians who evolve over time, re-inventing themselves and still put out incredible music. Like David Bowie, he was a chameleon. He successfully continued to re-invent himself & change as an artist yet remained appealing to millions of fans throughout the world. Look at his album “Changes”, that said it all.

Who have you collaborated with so far in your career?

So far only collaborated with Jared Farnes with lyrics & composing. I hope to collaborate with other great artists in my career.

How do you think you differ from other artists?

I think being young sets me apart from a few artists.  I have major passion for my music and continue to work on perfecting my craft. Each days makes me stronger and better. If you want something you have to work towards it. I am.

Dead or alive, who would be your dream collaboration?

OMG Alive, Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters. I think he’s the bees knees, lol. I really respect him and what he’s been through in his lifetime. I wold love to have the privilege of collaborating with him. Would also love to have Jimi Hendrix on my team, I think he was truly an inspiration as well.

What was the first album you bought?

I think it might have been Red Hot Chili Peppers.

What’s your favorite song at the moment?

At the moment it’s Victorious from Wolfmother.  I recently saw him in concert and I love the new song. It rocks!
If you had to sell your music collection tomorrow, what album would you leave in your draw?
I’d probably keep the Foo Fighters ‘Wasting Light”, I love the whole album and know how to play most of the songs on guitar.

What is your favorite saying?

Never give up easy, and remember to be grateful for everything along your way.

Do you have any pets?

2 Dogs, “Bully” a Jack Russell Terrier & “Harley”, Lab/Border Collie mix rescue.  Animal Lover for sure!  Would rescue all animals if he could.

Do you have any other siblings?

I am an only child

What other hobbies or interests do you have?

I love snowboarding, the mountains are only about 1 3/4 drive from the beach, so I can carve up the mountain and be back at the beach in time for dinner.  If I’m in for some intense snow, Mammoth is 5 hours North, guaranteed snow.  I’ve recently picked up slack-lining.  It’s kinda like tight rope walking. We tie off a slack line to 2 poles about 3-4 feet off the ground, then try to balance & walk across. We’ve also done a couple back & front flips off the line. It’s fun and a great core workout.

Are you currently seeing anyone?

No, I do not have a girlfriend presently.

Do you have any tattoos or piercings?
No, not yet. I thought about getting a tattoo, but I’d have to really love it to live with it forever.  Piercing, not sure if I’d get my ear pierced or not. It’s not something that I’m thinking about at the moment.

Is there anything else we should know about or any hidden talent you have?

My First Commercial was ‘Smarty Pants Vitamins’

My First film was Jimmy Vestvood, Amerikan Hero

I Played Airsoft with Tim vs Bob in So Cal. & Antioch Ca.

I know how to shoot a bow & arrow and handle a pistol and I can do amazing flips in a row on a trampoline.

Tell us more about your upcoming project or this new project?

I have another new original single coming out in May, called “Come Home”. It’s kinda an anthem, just a fun song. Not from a life experience, although I’m sure it will be someday. When you write about love and life it always seems to ring true. But this song is my favorite so far. It’s got a great beat and I really like it.  I hope everyone will too. Then I have a cover I did by Eddie Money, “Take Me Home Tonight”.  I really like this classic rock song and wanted to do it myself. That’ll be released sometime in May as well. Just depends which one I get finished with first. They’re both about finished.

What’s in the pipeline after this project?

I will have summer break soon. I have a friend musician and he’s asked me to play out with his band, iRate. They wear masks so know one will know it’s me filling in. It would be fun to go under the radar for a bit and just jam. I’m hoping to put my band together & play out at some gigs too. I will continue to write and go in the studio to put them down on track. I think I’ll be trying to check out some music schools as well cause I do want to continue with my education.

Thank you for your time and may you carry on making great, fresh music.

It’s been my pleasure and thank you for checking out my music and make sure you check out the videos below. Peace
