Liyah Bey – Million Dollar Girl:
Liyah Beyβs voice is classic, powerful, flexible, endlessly adaptable. The Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter began refining her instrument at a young age β sheβs been training and performing professionally since she was a child. Because of the breadth of her talents and the confidence with which she demonstrates them, sheβs been able to simulate some legendary voices with convincing fidelity. The Fugees, for instance, chose her to sing parts associated with Lauryn Hill at a Moscow concert; βLady Soulβ, a successful show sheβs developed herself, is a gorgeous vocal tribute to the great Aretha Franklin.
Weβd like to call your attention to βMillion Dollar Girlβ β a grand pop production that showcases both Beyβs adaptability and her passion. Produced by the award-winning Yan Perchuk β an audio engineer of great sensitivity who has worked with everyone from Karmin to jazz master Stanley Clarke β βMillion Dollarβ calls back to the horn-spiked soul classics of the β60s and β70s. This is fertile territory for Bey to inhabit. Youβre invited to bask in the heat she generates when she gets going.
A song as dramatic as βMillion Dollar Girlβ demands a video that goes straight over the top in the best way β and director Gev Miron has gifted us with racy, cinematic clip that starts as a fashion shoot and concludes in a burst of flames. This is an espionage story, and Liyah Bey is wrapped up in the international intrigue. The βmillion dollar girlβ of the title turns out to be a spy, played here by the winsome Sapir Azulay (Trafficked, Teachers), with an astronomical price on her head. She flirts outrageously with photographer Kathrine Kohl (9/11, Alice), wrests the guns away from her assailant, and leaves every frame she inhabits smoking. Bey does her part too β she meets Azulay in a deserted parking garage, and, in character, trades her some of the good stuff: a cassette with her golden voice on it.
