Wax Dr. West Interview

promko

Wax Dr. West has been on the Hobart scene since the early 2000’s . Producer and mentor he has gained an cult following in his home town and abroad with his eclectic and down right crazy production and DJ shows. Today we have the pleasure of introducing on of Australia’s most down right weird and against the grain producer & DJ , Wax Dr. West.

What is your name?  Jarrod Wescombe

Where are you from?   Hobart , Tasmania , Australia

How long have you been making music?   15 years now

How many songs /albums have you released to date?   about 20 singles and 2 EP.s

Can you tell us about your upcoming release and the background and inspirations behind it?   I had to take a bit of break due to wrist injury , so I haven’t been able to mix anywhere. The latest mixtape is just something i’ve thrown together for Evil Inc. as an exclusive and also as kind of a statement that i’m back I guess.

How have you ended up in the music industry?   I’ve always been interested in music , I could never really find the outlet to do what i wanted to until I started producing and using turntables and learning how to scratch. Always having the need to do it broke through any barrier I had of not being able to play instruments as well as my friends. I failed music class as well …

What do you think of the music industry in 2015?   I think it’s great , barriers are being broken and genres are being pushed every day. Pop music is being produced by proper producers , music is just getting better and better man. It’s great.

Who do you think the most influential artist?   To me? Wow a lot. Myself I have been heavily influenced by 90’s trip hop productions , when I would stay up all night watching rage on ABC as a kid. Production wise my biggest influences are Ennio Morricone , Kid Koala , DJ Food , Coldcut Beastie Boys , Dr Dre , RJD2 , MC DOOM , Slynk ,DJ Danger Mouse , Daft Punk , Dhampir and the rest of the Evil Inc. crew

Who have you collaborated with so far in your career?   Myself and Charles Victor did some stuff earlier , but since then I’ve very much been solo

Dead or alive, who would be your dream collaboration?   I’d love to be able to do a track with John Lennon

What was the first album you bought?   Beastie Boys – Intergalactic

What’s your favorite song at the moment? Stompa phunk – Crowd seems to move (burns right mix)

Who is the most influential artist now, and 10 years ago? Right now there is no one, there is no one leading any kind of scene and it’s fantastic. A couple of years ago i’d easily be able to shoot of several names but right now we are once again in new frontiers in dance music. 10 Years ago was dominated by artists with millions of dollars and record labels behind them pushing every piece of shit they had. Nowadays global record dollars and advertising mean nothing , we have music uploaded from artists around the world and people listen to want they want. not the few options they were given.

If you had to sell your music collection tomorrow, what album would you leave in your draw?   ennio morricone the mission soundtrack

How do you think you differ from other artists?   Giving a shit about a real show. Like playing a real show. Anyone can produce a track , But you have to play in front of a crowd and sell not only the track , but yourself. You have to entertain. Do something people haven’t seen before. Don’t just do the same thing over and over again. It gets boring.

What is your favorite saying?   Fuck it we’ll do it live.

What other hobbies or interests do you have?   I am a huge gaming fan. I actually love shutting myself away and playing games with mates online.

Do you have any tattoos or piercings?  Nope I am a wuss.

Tell us more about your upcoming project or this new project?   I have another EP in the works with a single very shortly about to drop.

What’s in the pipeline after this project?   After the EP production I’ll be heading up to Brisbane , Australia for a bit of a tour with Evil Inc.

Thank you for your time and may you carry on making dope, fresh music.

Thank you so much for having me!
