Steve Mahabir Releases Powerful New Alternative Single “Away” – A Haunting Look at Love and Addiction

Toronto alternative rock veteran Steve Mahabir is back with his third compelling single, “Away,” out October 10th. The track is a deep dive into the complex struggle of love intertwined with addiction, serving as another potent preview of his eagerly anticipated second solo album, Peace Love War & Hate, set for release in Fall 2025.

“Away”: The Anthem of Impossible Choices

“Away” immediately hooks listeners with its raw emotional honesty, crystallizing the agony of a high-stakes relationship in one unforgettable line: “I can’t live without you, I can’t live with you.”

This new alternative single captures the intense tension between the urge to escape a destructive pattern and the desperate need to cling to what you’ve built. It’s a powerful narrative on desire, survival, and the difficult choices faced when addiction casts its shadow over love. For fans of deeply felt, guitar-driven Canadian rock and meaningful songwriting, “Away” is an essential listen.

A Toronto Supergroup Backs Mahabir

Mahabir, a skilled singer/songwriter/guitarist based in Toronto, is joined on “Away” by a stellar line-up of local music veterans, adding a rich, seasoned layer to the track’s sound:

  • John Borra (Bass)
  • Michael Boguski (Keyboards – of Blue Rodeo fame)
  • Glenn Milchem (Drums – also of Blue Rodeo)

This powerhouse collaboration elevates “Away” to a must-hear single for anyone following the best of the Toronto music scene.

The Legacy of Peace Love War & Hate

“Away” follows previous singles and builds momentum for the upcoming full-length album, Peace Love War & Hate. The album carries significant weight, as it was the final project recorded and produced by the late, great Peter J. Moore, a Grammy and Genie Award winner who tragically passed away in 2023. Moore, known for his work with legendary artists, recorded the tracks at his Concord Sound Studio.

Further recording and engineering were completed by George Guerra, with additional production provided by the iconic Terry Brown, best known as the longtime producer for the prog-rock giants Rush. This lineage of legendary production talent guarantees a sonically rich and impactful album.

From Groovy Religion to Solo Success

Steve Mahabir’s journey through music is a compelling part of Canadian alt-rock history.

A Juno nominee, Mahabir was a co-founder of the seminal Canadian alt-rock band Groovy Religion in the 1980s, recording three albums with the influential group. He also lent his talent to other notable acts like Scott B. Sympathy, Parts Found in Sea, and Ministry of Love.

After a hiatus, Mahabir made a powerful return in 2015 with his critically acclaimed debut solo album, Angel In Parkdale, which solidified his reputation as a formidable solo artist.

“Away” is the third single from Peace Love War & Hate. Be sure to listen to this impactful new track, and keep an ear out for more singles dropping soon before the full album arrives in Fall 2025!
