Peter Ulrich Collaboration - Squaring the Circle

Peter Ulrich Takes Final Bow with Squaring the Circle

The Fourth Single from “Final Reflections” Tells a Tale of a World in Turmoil as Humanity Struggles for Balance and Stability

Oct, 2019 (New York, NY) — In the big world of music, news of the superstars dominate—both major fixtures and the brief comets that streak across the sky. However perhaps music history will someday quietly take note of the last recorded vocal performance by Peter Ulrich with The Peter Ulrich Collaboration on “Squaring the Circle,” a featured song on Final Reflections, the final album in the epic Painted Caravan Trilogy. One reviewer, describes the song, to which Ulrich also contributed lyrics and music, as a “tribal moment” of subtle darkness and depth with “wonderfully ambient riff-work” Like other songs in Final Reflections, “Squaring the Circle” leans to spacious and intricate artistry instead of the simple appeal of mere musical comfort. The song reflects elements from Dead Can Dance, Peter Ulrich’s old band, and a little flavoring from such modern composers as Karlheinz Stockhausen but ultimately it’s a “typically” unique creation from the free-wheeling Collaboration. The special sauce in the recipe “Squaring the Circle” is the voice of featured singer Mira Morningstar, whose final plea to “square the circle” is likely to linger in the memory.

The Peter Ulrich Collaboration is a collaboration helmed by Peter Ulrich, former percussionist for the iconic Dead Can Dance, the brilliantly innovative band that music historian Ian McFarlane described as world music that “constructed soundscapes of mesmerizing grandeur and solemn beauty… with African polyrhythms, Gaelic folk, Gregorian chants, Middle-Eastern mantras and art-rock”. Ulrich met Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, the founders and cornerstones of Dead Can Dance, in London in 1982 and joined the band on drums and percussion. After leaving DCD and after releasing a string of critically acclaimed releases as a solo artist, Peter’s next big step was The Peter Ulrich Collaboration.

The Collaboration mixes folk rock, world rock, art rock and psychedelic music with a world view that encompasses alternative history, fictional universes, Steampunk, and Goth, and recalls the exquisitely crafted soundscapes of Dead Can Dance. The group features songwriting by Ulrich, Lloyd, and New York songwriters Anne Husick, Sara Wendt and Kathy Sheppard among others with vocals by David Steele, Wendt, Ulrich, Jen Elliott, Shane Chapman, Stephanie Linn, Timothy Dark and other bright American and English talents. The vocalists are backed by a crackerjack band playing rock, post-rock, world and folk influenced music. After the release of two albums, thrilled New York Collaboration fans were were treated to a live performance by the band at Manhattan’s famous Webster Hall in 2015.

The Peter Ulrich Collaboration’s “Final Reflections”; the final chapter in the well received The Painted Caravan Trilogy, will be available for streaming and purchase on all the major services starting December 3rd, 2019.

After refining her musical chops by gigging with local bands and by working in a recording studio in Hamburg, Germany, U.K. based Mira Morningstar soon developed her own distinctive style as a writer and singer of electropop ballads that are ethereal or sultry or sometimes a disconcertingly delightful mixture of both. Her albums, Woods of Hope and Heart Armour 33 featured subject matter ranging from fairyland themes to darker haunting songs–one even including the tale of a serial killer! Her approach and her range of themes plus, most importantly, her gorgeous voice made her the perfect partner to join with Peter Ulrich in sharing vocals for his song, “Squaring the Circle”.
