Lowertown Big Thumb Review: A Folk-Jazz Anthem for a New Generation

Lowertown just dropped “Big Thumb” and it’s a total shift from the polished indie-pop we usually hear. If their last single was a fever dream of infatuation, this one is the quiet, slightly dusty morning after. It’s part of their upcoming album, Ugly Duckling Union, and it introduces a sound they’re calling “folk-jazz murmur.”

Honestly, the way they wrote this is as interesting as the song itself. Olivia Osby and Avsha Weinberg went full DIY, using a “cut-up” technique inspired by the 90s industrial scene. Olivia spent weeks gathering old newspaper clippings and random scraps of text, spreading them across the floor while they jammed on a 12-string guitar and harmonica.

The phrase “Big Thumb” came out of that chaos—a nod to the hitchhiker’s gesture. It’s a perfect metaphor for that specific Gen Z feeling of being stuck on the side of the road, waiting for a ride to a destination that hasn’t even been built yet.

The Vibe and the Visuals

The track feels intentionally unkempt. It’s about generational aimlessness—that sense that the old roadmaps for life don’t work anymore, so you’re either drifting or forced to hack out a brand-new path through the woods.

The music video, directed by Jack Haven, leans hard into this surrealist energy. You’ve got Avsha playing a weary traveler and Olivia as a sort of cryptic figure testing him. It’s atmospheric, a little bit haunting, and matches the “folk-jazz” textures of the song perfectly.

More Than Just an Album

Lowertown isn’t just releasing a record on May 22; they’re building a whole world. Ugly Duckling Union is coming with:

  • A playable Minecraft world for fans to explore.

  • Original comics by Silas Orion.

  • Physical artifacts like plushies and handbooks.

It’s a “misfit toy” manifesto—music for the people who feel like they don’t quite fit into the standard digital or physical boxes we’re forced into.
