Interview with ‘YB Brown Sugar’

Interview with 'YB Brown Sugar'

My name is YB Brown Sugar and I’m a 15 year old producer, artist, and engineer from Pittsburgh, PA! My newest hit single Frappuccino just dropped off of my upcoming producer album called “Far Frum Perfict,” My album “Far Frum Perfict” will be dropping on March 19!

Where are you from?

I was born in Columbus, Ohio but have lived in Pittsburgh, PA for almost all my life.

How long have you been making music?

I began making music in June of 2019 off of my phone. But in the start of 2020 I bought new equipment and began experimenting with my sound. Since then I’ve grown and developed with my confidence, music style and knowledge.

How many songs /albums have you released to date?

I released an album in early June but have since taken it down as it was not the sound I wanted to be remembered by. Hopefully with my upcoming project I can show my new style. Other than that I currently have 6 singles released on all platforms.

Can you tell us about your latest release and the background and inspirations behind it?

Frappuccino was really just a set up for Far Frum Perfict. I wasn’t really expecting the success it got but, it hit over 5000 streams on Spotify in less than a week. It was just supposed to be a fun song with a few of my artist friends. The song was fully produced by me featuring J. Cast on the hook, KalvXn on the second verse, and Koda on the final verse. Go show some love to them as well.

How have you ended up in the music industry?

It really started from a young age. All of my grandparents, parents, and siblings all played music. I first knew I loved music when I use to drum to music on my bed with an old pair of drum sticks. Later I joined my school band for percussion. In 2019, a popular artist from my school started gaining some traction and it inspired me. After trial and error I kept making music and started to see improvment.

What do you think of the music industry in 2021?

I think it’s all about hard work and image. I’ve seen super talented people who don’t put in work and don’t receive any fame. And I’ve seen artists who I don’t particularly enjoy but they are blowing up on social media all the time. It’s really anyone’s game.

Who do you think the most influential artist?

For me it started with listening to the radio in the late 2000’s. But my main inspirations nowadays are my managers Verse and R0ssrage, some underground friends and of course people like Trippie Redd, J. Cole, Russ, Tyler, The Creator and more.

Who have you collaborated with so far in your career?

I haven’t really collaborated with any big artists so far in my career. Right now I work mostly with some of my music friends and that’s really it. I’m hoping to work with some bigger names in the future for sure though!

How do you think you differ from other artists?

I think I differ because I haven’t seen many underground people, or anyone my age do what I do. This year I started to release songs produced by me with the main artist. I’ve been called the Benny Blanco of the underground and that’s honestly what I’m going for.

Dead or alive, who would be your dream collaboration?

Some dream collaborations would be Jack Harlow, Juice WRLD, Lil Skies, and so many more.

What was the first album you bought?

The first album I bought and fell in love with was IGOR by Tyler, The Creator. It gave me a completely different perspective on music and what you can do with sound. This one is super close to my heart as I got to see him live in concert which was one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had.

What’s your favourite song at the moment?

A song I’ve had on repeat for a long time is All I Know by Machine Gun Kelly. A super fun track that brings me back to Summer vibes.

If you had to sell your music collection tomorrow, what album would you leave in your draw?

If we’re talking about my own music I would keep my newest project. But if music in general I would keep IGOR like I said before.

What is your favourite saying?

“I’d rather be happy being myself than sad trying to please everyone else” – J. Cole

It’s just a reminder to me that your own opinion is the only one that matters. You don’t have anyone to prove except yourself.

What other hobbies or interests do you have?

I enjoy working at my job, working out, hanging with friends and making people laugh. Simply just having conversations with certain people can be the highlight of my day.

Do you have any tattoos or piercings?

No, I do plan on having some kind of tattoo when I’m older but neither one as of now.

Tell us more about your upcoming project or this new project?

This project is the intro to a whole new side of my state of mind as well as my production. I’ve only released a few self produced songs and this project is the official statement that I am self produced. As well as the title, “Far Frum Perfict.” It’s about me accepting that I’m never going to be perfect but I can still try as hard as possible to get there.

What’s in the pipeline after this project?

I’m probably not going to release another project for awhile but my plan is to do monthly singles with as many people as possible.

Thank you for your time and may you carry on making great, fresh music.

Thank you all for having me! I can’t wait to show my music with everyone and artistrack is making that dream become one step closer.
