Interview with ‘Rosegang’

Interview with 'Rosegang'

Rosegang is an emerging artist making waves from Aotearoa – New Zealand. He has been recording and releasing music, dropping dope visuals and showing his diversity as a rapper, singer/song-writer, multi-instrumentalist and entrepreneur for the past 2 years.

Where are you from?

Tauranga, New Zealand

How long have you been making music?

I started writing songs when I was 10 years old

How many songs /albums have you released to date?

5 singles so far will be total of 6 on the 12th November

Can you tell us about your latest release and the background and inspirations behind it?

The track 187 is about drinking, partying, drugs, some struggles I know a lot of us struggle with. In the visuals you’ll see that I arrive at a poker game and my rivals at the table are two demons. These two demons oversee the drinking, partying, drugs in our world. I wanted to portray it in the visuals such as I took my questions and issues with these struggles to the top. Moreover 187 is who I am, it’s another name I’m called other than Rosegang. By titling my track as 187 it’s more like saying this is who I am. I am a beautiful ugly mess. But it’s me. In depth 187 means Rose Fucking Gang.

How have you ended up in the music industry?

I guess I decided to put myself here. No one else made the decision for me. I’ve always been into music growing up so I wanted to further my career and see how far I can go

What do you think of the music industry in 2021?

I feel like in today’s music industry everyone sounds the same. I feel like a lot of people have got the wrong idea about music and focus too much on the spotlight and attention rather than expressing themselves through the music. The reason God gave us this talent is so people can be amazed by it. Music is a gift. It is not for us, it is for everyone else to enjoy.

Who do you think the most influential artist?

There are a lot of artists out there I do admire and love their music but if I’m being honest it’s me. Reason being is because it’s me vs me. I don’t want to sound like everybody else. I want my own sound and trend going on. I’m so focused on myself I don’t have time to look over the fence.

Who have you collaborated with so far in your career?

So far my brother Phlimingo as we work a lot together. At this stage we are trying to focus on us but collaborating with other artists is definitely on the charts.

How do you think you differ from other artists?

I believe what makes me different is my sound, I don’t sound like other rappers and also I play drums. No other rapper I know incorporates this with their bars. In addition I think it’s my lifestyle and me just being me. I’m not trying to be anybody else. There’s only one Rosegang in this world.

Dead or alive, who would be your dream collaboration?

Drake. He ain’t just an artist he is an entrepreneur too.

What was the first album you bought?

If I can remember the first album I bought, I was about 8 or 9 years old and I think I bought the album Devotion? I remember the band was Newsboys.

What’s your favourite song at the moment?

My favourite song right now would have to be All For Love by Sigala ft. Rita Ora

If you had to sell your music collection tomorrow, what album would you leave in your draw?

12 over 6

What is your favourite saying?

I have a couple quotes I live by and also I wrote them
Live like a King but have the heart of a servant – RG
There’s always a way around the mountain – RG

What other hobbies or interests do you have?

I love dogs, drinking, fast cars, making money and duck shooting on occasion.

Do you have any tattoos or piercings?

Yes, I have ear piercings and half of my body is tattooed so far. Will finish my body one day.

Tell us more about your upcoming project or this new project?

So the projects I have coming up are a mini series that are broken up into 3 parts. It’s really me stripping back the walls and showing what’s really going on in my head. I don’t think I’ve ever felt this vulnerable.

What’s in the pipeline after this project?

I already have the next two projects in the making, there will be another mini series and also more collaborations.

Thank you for your time and may you carry on making great, fresh music.

I definitely got more music on the way already so keep a lookout.
