Engi – Interview

500x500_engi

Engi, a musical artist from New York is taking over the electronic scene in a blitzkrieg fashion. Keep your eye on this artist, there seems to be quite a big future ahead of him!

What is your name? Engi also known as Gary Gullo

Where are you from?   New York

How long have you been making music?  I have been producing music since I was a teenager, but I started taking it seriously over the past 4 years or so.

How many songs /albums have you released to date?   I currently have 7 tracks officially released. I have another EP dropping on 12/29/14 and a single dropping on New Years day.

Can you tell us about your latest release and the background and inspirations behind it?   My latest release is the “There Is No Mercy EP” which I released with PitchBend Recordings. There Is No Mercy came about by seeing the struggle of fellow artists who share the same dream as I do in such a cut throat industry. Each one of the tracks I created express both personal and general issues people are faced with day to day.

How have you ended up in the music industry?  I ended up in the music industry through quite a series of events. I started with a t-shirt company named pearl district, which then branched off into an events company called Zero Gravity NYC. Through the both of these I decided to take things a step further and pursue my own career as an artist.

What do you think of the music industry in 2014/15?  The music industry in 2014 is quite interesting to say the least. Electronic wise I absolutely love the fact that the masses have begun to move away from the stereotypical main stage progressive house and into the realm of deep house.

Dead or alive, who would be your dream collaboration?   If Otis Redding was still alive I would absolutely love to collaborate with him. His music had such soul, it is unbelievable..

What’s your favorite song at the moment?   This one is going to take a lot of people by surprise. I must admit Frank Sinatra – Fly Me To The Moon is my all time favourite.

If you had to sell your music collection tomorrow, what album would you leave in your draw?   Thats a tough question, but I would have to go with my Wu Tang Clan – 36 Chambers vinyl. That album is precious to me.

How do you think you differ from other artists?  I differ from other artists in the fact that I generally don’t stick with just one sub genre of electronic music. Depending how I am feeling emotionally at the time is generally the sound that comes out in my creations. I try to put my heart and soul into every piece I do. Each track holds somewhat a sentimental value to me.

What is your favourite saying?   Overnight success takes about 15 years.

What other hobbies or interests do you have?   I have an obsession with technology, and computers.

Tell us more about your upcoming project or this new project?    On 12/29/2014 I will be releasing a 5 track EP with Audioplay Records. It is quite the diverse EP going from Techno, to tribal, and straight down to some deep house. I also have a single being released on New Years day with PitchBend Recordings. This track is more of an Electro House banger to start the new year off correctly.

We can see you have been working with PitchBend Recordings quite a bit lately, how did your relationship with them come about?  I actually was contacted by their A&R agent Tim Waters via soundcloud. They had come across my music, and were interested in signing a couple of my tracks. I signed a 3 track EP with them called Your Spell. Your Spell ended up number 1 on their Beatport Top 10 within 4 days which led to quite a few more releases in a short peiod of time. I must say working with both Tim, and Theo has been an incredible experience. They both are extremely personable and talented professionals who exhibit exactly what you would want to see in an industry such as this.

Thank you for your time and may you carry on making dope, fresh music.
