Divergent “Runnin’ Free”: A Folk Rock Anthem of Freedom and Rebellion
Divergent’s latest single, “Runnin’ Free,” is a folk rock anthem capturing the exhilaration of freedom, love, and rebellion. After nearly 40 years of musical journeys and reunions, James Richards, Mike McAlister, and Paul Richards have finally harnessed their creative passion to form Divergent, a trio committed to original music that blends experience, individuality, and boundless energy.
The Journey to Divergent
Originally part of the Chautauqua Road Band in Iowa during their teenage years, James and Mike reunited decades later to bring their musical vision to life. Joined by James’ brother, Paul, the trio decided to focus exclusively on original music, shedding inhibitions and embracing their shared passion for songwriting and performance.
“Runnin’ Free” – A Song Years in the Making

What began as a simple chord progression evolved over the years, with James refining the chorus and Paul adding a rock edge that brought the song to life. The result is an anthem of resilient, rebellious young love, capturing the indescribable feeling of reclaiming one’s story without looking back.
