Dar.Ra proudly present the official music video for, ‘Diamonds N Shadows’
February 28, 2019
If youβve ever felt lost in the rat race (and who hasnβt?), weβve got a video for you. We think youβll relate to the beleaguered but ultimately defiant characters in βDiamonds N Shadows,β the latest clip from the outspoken London singer-songwriter Dar.Ra. When we say theyβre rats in a suburban cage, weβre not just speaking figuratively. The actors in Brendan McGowanβs witty, tricky, subversive clip look just like typical upper-middle-class subdivision dwellers; well, except for their giant mouse heads. Theyβre caught in a comfortable rodent society β and when they realize itβs a dead end, theyβre moved to burn it all down.
Dar.Raβs music doesnβt always prompt such radical action in the people who hear it, but it does tend to get listeners thinking. Dirty Lil Secrets, his 2018 EP, was a collection of barbed stories: tales designed to open the eyes and ears of those content to sleepwalk through their days. Like most of the projects that Dar.Ra has done since the β90s β heβs been a pop producer, a rock performer, a dance music remixer, and many other things β Secrets consisted of productive collisions, juxtapositions between styles, and inspired provocations. Heβs carried that fire into New Kinda Normal, his latest set. Itβs his most direct, most honest, most soulful, and most uncompromising recording yet, and βDiamonds N Shadowsβ is its propulsive centerpiece.
Brendan McGowan has already demonstrated a profound understanding of Dar.Raβs motivations. His clips for βHeart Shape Pillβ and βNightstepper,β the two singles from Dirty Lil Secrets, deepened and enhanced the singer-songwriterβs storytelling. The βHeart Shape Pillβ video, in particular, a tale of a sexual identity crisis, probed the mysteries of deceit and self-delusion β issues that have always been at the heart of Dar.Raβs writing. Conceptually, βDiamonds N Shadowsβ picks up right were βHeart Shape Pillβ leaves off: the βmiceβ in the clip are vaguely aware that theyβre on a deadly treadmill, but at least at first, theyβre not sure whether they can do anything about it. We see a husband, wife, and child; all play their roles, and all are deeply dissatisfied. Itβs only when the three see conformity for the glue trap that it is that theyβre willing to step outside their routine. The message is clear: standing on your own two feet might be a dangerous thing to do, but for men and mice alike, itβs the only genuine way to live.
