Thereβs a reason why we at HIP Video Promo are so passionate about working with independent artists, and Austin, TXβs Adrian Conner is one of the big ones. Adrian first came onto the scene as part of her outfit Adrian & the Sickness, and more recently mesmerized viewers with a trifecta of videos, βRio Grande,β βDeeper Feeling,β and βFree Love,β with her duo Beaux Cheveux. She also gains a healthy dose of recognition for her roll as lead guitarist in the all-female AC/DC cover band, Hellβs Belles. Sheβs even spent time as a music video programmer at Garbage TV in Austin, TX!
For her ninth release, SpazKitty, Conner brought her A-game. With a team of excellent musicians and a newly refined recording skill set using Logic as her weapon, Conner hit the studio with her years of inspiration and ingenuity at her side. The first single from SpazKitty was βBelligerent,β a blistering feminist battle cry that hit the good olβ boys club right between the eyes. It was simultaneously topical in the post #MeToo movement and symbolic of the fight that Adrian has been fighting for many years.
The single, βAirport Coffee,β finds Adrian fighting another battle for the common man and woman; corporate greed. βDoesnβt matter what side youβre on, they both sold us outβ and βOver the years the one percent got the jokeβ and βYou pay the tax while they skip outβ are sobering, scathing observations of the financial world weβre all forced to navigate on someone elseβs terms. Adrian reminds the audience that like that yucky, burnt airport coffee, we just keep buying it up and drinking it down.
Visually speaking βAirport Coffeeβ is another tantalizing kaleidoscope of optics pulled straight from the left side of Connerβs brain. The slick use of overlays, blending, lighting, and green screen keying creates not only an impressive amount of eye candy, but also a video that is definitely Connerβs highest quality clip to date. While some elements like the heavy grain and washed out colors are dialed back, she still uses other signature looks of hers to walk this video through four and a half minutes of funk. Thereβs even an extended bass solo in the middle of the clip, an unexpected treat from an artist whose Gibson SG has become her hallmark. As you may have guessed, sheβs got some crazy 4-string chops as well.
