Where are you from?
I am from Los Angeles and currently attending college in NYC.
How long have you been making music?
I have been making music since I was 10 years old. However, I have been very committed, focused, and serious about it for the last 3 years.
How many songs /albums have you released to date?
I have released over a dozen singles, a full album and an EP so all in all, I have released over 30 songs.
Can you tell us about your latest release and the background and inspirations behind it?
“Seeing Stars” blends the soundscapes of indie pop, synth pop, and classic rock to create a dreamy world focused on the intricacies of falling in and out of love, showcasing the various ways in which we metaphorically “see stars:” seeing stars because of being so dizzy from the confusion of a relationship, putting someone on a pedestal so much so that you see them as a star, and spending late nights stargazing to hide from worldly problems. This EP tells a story: from the pop-rock opener, “HOLD UR PEACE,” which brutally slams an “addict” to “no commitment” for their mixed signals against guitar shredding and energetic drum fills, to the vulnerable ballad “Right Past Me” which describes a sense of regret over one’s own mistakes in a relationship, all the way to the upbeat, synth-filled “In Between” which depicts the excitement and nerves of connecting with someone new.
“secrets” closes out the EP by emphasizing how past relationships continue to impact us as we “cling” onto the memories shared with that person. The anthemic melody, nostalgic background vocals, and synth solos build to create a soundscape that resembles the end of a coming-of-age film and spotlights the lyrics as they describe the process of finding closure and being at peace with the fact that former heartbreaks stick with us over time.
How did you first get into music, and what inspired you to pursue a career in it?
I’ve always loved telling stories: I grew up recreating scenes from my favorite TV shows, writing my own scripts, and improvising one-woman musicals for my family. My childhood iPad is filled with videos of me singing songs I made up. When I was ten years old, I was approached by a music producer and released my first single. However, it wasn’t until about four years ago that my focus shifted from being an actress who released a single here and there to being a professional singer-songwriter.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences and how have they impacted your music?
Sonically, I’m so inspired by every artist I listen to. Recently, I’ve been listening to a lot of The Marias, Alessi Rose and Rachel Chinouriri. My all time favorite artists are Lorde and Conan Gray! In terms of writing lyrics, I’m obviously inspired by my own life, but I’m also often inspired by my friends and their lives! I love telling stories that I can draw from real experiences but shaped into a unique song.
What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a musician and how have you overcome them?
I’ve had my fair share of challenges for sure, and one of them is writer’s block. But, I like to remind myself that this is normal for every creative and focus on other aspects of my music career, such as preparing for and playing live shows.
How has your music evolved over the course of your career, and where do you see it going in the future?
I like to say that my music has grown with me. I’m only 20 so my music taste is changing as is my life experience, which, in turn, means my music is ever-evolving. I love experimenting with different genres and I think each song I create helps me better understand who I am as an artist and what kind of music I want to make going forward. Since my debut album, I think I’ve definitely improved as a songwriter in terms of being able to convey what I want to convey, but I’ve also changed as a person, meaning the themes I sing about have as well.
Who have you collaborated with so far in your career?
I have collaborated with some amazing producers and co-writers on my music so far.
The “Seeing Stars” EP has a few collaborations on it, such as Sam Beresford from the band Winnetka Bowling League and Mike Pepe who’s produced for the Plain White Tee’s!
Can you describe your creative process and what goes into making a song or album?
My creative process really depends on the song! Sometimes I’ll be sitting with my guitar for hours, ruminating over chord progressions and lyrics I can match to them. Other times, I get a melody and lyric idea while I’m walking outside or hanging out with friends and have to awkwardly pull out my phone to record a voice memo before I forget. I also work with cowriters and producers so sometimes I’ll come to a writing session with a fully formed idea that just needs instrumentation and sometimes I’ll show up with a three-word phrase I think would be interesting for a song and we work it out together. Each songwriting process is unique!
Dead or alive, who would be your dream collaboration?
I love so many artists and would love an opportunity to collaborate with them all! However, it would be a dream to collaborate with Conan Gray, Lorde or Eminem!
What was the first album you bought?
I don’t remember the exact one, but it was probably a Victorious or Big Time Rush soundtrack! I grew up absolutely loving those shows.
What’s your favorite song at the moment?
“It all works out in the end.”
If you had to sell your music collection tomorrow, what album would you leave in your draw?
Melodrama by Lorde—I adore that album!
What is your favourite saying?
“It all works out in the end.”
What other hobbies or interests do you have?
I love to exercise, spend time with friends, read, watch movies and write Letterboxd reviews for them, try fun new vegan foods, go thrifting, and play with my 4 cats!
Tell us more about your upcoming project or this new project?
What’s in the pipeline after this project?
More music and hopefully I will be touring!
Thank you for your time and may you carry on making great, fresh music. *
