Artistrack brings to you βA Lil Countryβ by IKO
The name IKO is short for IKOYI, which is pronounced E-COY-E. Ikoyi is an island in Lagos, Nigeria. His mother went to the Peace Corps in Nigeria, fell in love with Ikoyi, and the rest is 6β3, 240 pounds of history.
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Ikoyi has been an avid music lover, practically since birth! At three-years old, he would take out all the pots and pans, sit down in the kitchen floor, make a drum set, and play solos for hours until his parents couldnβt take it any longer. At the age of 12, Ikoyi became a real drummer, and would later earn a spot into the School Of Music at the University Of Southern California, where he graduated with a BA in Communications.
The love for hip-hop also began around the age of 12. After listening to legends such as Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, etc., Ikoyi began his journey of songwriting. In 1996, his song βFootstepsβ won a Georgia Music Industry Award for βBest Hip-Hop Songβ. His most notable song, the 2004 version of βA Lilβ Countryβ, won second place in the Hip-Hop/R&B category in the 2004 International Songwriting Competition, and was a finalist in the Hip-Hop category in the 2005 Independent Music Awards. The biggest thrill for IKO was receiving a phone call from D.M.C. from the iconic group, Run-D.M.C., telling him he was a judge for the International Songwriting Competition, and he loved βA Lilβ Countryβ! This new version of “A Lil Country” is about IKO’s upbringing, a glimpse into his lifestyle, and most importantly…it’s a song for people to have fun! π€π½π€π½π€π½
