Hybrid presenting the Official Music Video for, ‘Hold Your Breath’
A video doesnβt need to look like a movie to be effective, but for some styles, it helps. Hybrid makes widescreen electronic music β the type thatβs called βcinematicβ, for good reason β and throughout their two-decade run, theyβve always shot videos that match their ambitions. Whatβs more, the British band has done plenty of work on actual movies made for theatrical release: theyβve scored more than twenty films, including Vice, Domino, and, Billionaire Ransom. They understand how to use music to amplify their storytelling, and how to match sound with visual images. Theyβve applied all of that experience to the immersive clip for βHold Your Breathβ β an eight-plus minute video that plays like a Hollywood blockbuster.
βHold Your Breathβ is the sort of track that demands a dramatic video. Everything about the song suggests action: the beats, the synths, the lyrics, the subtly urgent vocal performance. Itβs a standout cut on Light Of The Fearless, the acclaimed fifth Hybrid album, and one that demonstrates the flexibility of the groupβs sound. Elements of rock, pop, breakbeat, trip-hop, and classical music collide and fuse and break apart in real time (thereβs even a brilliant cover of Tom Pettyβs βI Wonβt Back Downβ). We donβt need to tell you that Fearless includes music inspired by the recent soundtracks that Hybrid has composed β youβll feel it. βHybridβ is a sonic movie, and, like any good art film, itβs one that rewards audience re-visitation.
To make the clip for βHold Your Breath,β Hybrid has called upon some of their friends from the realm of filmed entertainment to give them a hand. Theyβve landed some very impressive collaborators, including Academy Award-winner director John Stephenson and actor James Purefoy (HBOβs Rome, Solomon Kane, Altered Carbon) to portray the clipβs malevolent Mr. Black.
Mike and Charlotte Truman of Hybrid are the stars of this show, and they prove theyβre deft actors as well as visionary recording artists. Theyβre a pair of renegades looking to pull off a heist against heavy odds, and they play their roles to the hilt, thwarting Mr. Blackβs plans with an audacious break-in. Mike Truman also edited the clip and provided the visual effects, and Charlotte Truman wrote the screenplay and acted as the producer. Could these two make the next great cinematic thriller as well as the next landmark electronic album? Nobody familiar with their work would be surprised if they did.
