Stretch Money – Where Was You At:
Success is a funny thing. When times are good, everyone wants to be on that train. When things are tough, the coattail riders are quick to expose themselves. Stretch Money is an artist who knows just how fickle these people can be, and in his new single “Where Was You At,” he takes direct aim at those that folded up like a cheap lawn chair when things got rough.
Stretch Money was the king of the Detroit airwaves in the late naughts, lighting up stations like HOT 102.7 and 97.9 WJLB with his debut album Takes Money To Make Money. Working side by with his crew and confidant Crane Novacane, Stretch Money put himself and his sound on the map. It was while riding this wave that his career was put on hold while he served time. This unanticipated detour is the sort of thing that might permanently disable the career of a less ambitious, determined player. Stretch Money, however, took it as an opportunity to double down on his skills, find some personal introspection, and most importantly figure out who his real friends are.
“Where Was You At” (directed by Crane Novacane) is Stretch Money’s no-holds-barred examination of the hard times he’s faced in life and having to do it himself when some of his closest friends leave him holding the bag. Each hardship plays out on the screen with Stretch tackling each hurdle by himself. Car troubles, legal run-ins, time behind bars, they all happen while the same car passes by, declining to help a friend in need. The tables are turned, however, when Stretch gets out and rebounds to epic new heights. Those that couldn’t be bothered to help a friend in need are now coming to the table to try to get their own piece of the action but Stretch Money is having none of it.
