GENA: Douwannabwitastar!? Review – Liv.e & Karriem Riggins Soul Duo

GENA’s “Douwannabwitastar!?” is the Late-Night Anthem We Needed

If you’ve been following Liv.e or Karriem Riggins individually, you knew their collaboration—GENA—was going to be cool. But I don’t think any of us expected “Douwannabwitastar!?” to hit quite this hard.

It’s one of those rare tracks that feels like a private conversation you’ve accidentally walked into. It’s smoky, it’s loose, and it’s arguably the smoothest thing to come out of the Lex Records camp in years.

The Dynamic: Liv.e Meets Karriem Riggins

On paper, this pairing is a dream. You’ve got Liv.e, whose voice has always had this “I just woke up and I’m already cooler than you” quality, and Karriem Riggins, the man who basically redefined how hip-hop and jazz percussion live together.

When they call the project GENA (God Energy, Naturally Amazing), it doesn’t feel like ego. It feels like a description of the chemistry.

Why “Douwannabwitastar!?” Hits Different

Most “neo-soul” or “jazz-fusion” tracks try too hard to be technical. This single does the opposite—it breathes.

  • The Groove: Riggins provides a beat that’s steady but slightly “off-kilter,” giving it that raw, analog soul feel that’s been missing from mainstream R&B.

  • The Horns: There’s a brass section in here that feels like it belongs in a 1970s detective film, but it’s chopped up in a way that feels totally 2026.

  • Liv.e’s Delivery: She isn’t over-singing. She’s gliding. Her lyrics about fame and “being a star” feel more like an internal monologue than a pop hook, which makes the whole song feel incredibly intimate.

The Visuals

If you haven’t seen the video directed by Mackai Sharp, go watch it. It’s all neon lights, grainy textures, and effortless style. It captures exactly what the song sounds like: a blurry, beautiful night where you aren’t quite sure where you’re headed, but you’re enjoying the ride.

The Verdict

“Douwannabwitastar!?” isn’t trying to be a chart-topping TikTok earworm (though it’s catchy enough to be one). It’s a piece of art for people who actually care about the texture of music.

If you’re a fan of Erykah Badu, J Dilla, or just music that makes you want to pour a drink and turn off your phone, this is your song of the summer.
