This song reflects with nostalgia, along with a certain degree of sadness and despair, on the idealism of youth and the realities one faces with age. The song was inspired by a personal history of student activism followed some years later by a visit to Moscow, spending time in the Kremlin, viewing Lenin’s mausoleum, and reckoning with what has become of not only the ideals of Russia’s revolution, but also of what often becomes of the optimism of young adults.
