Into the Fog: Chelsea Wolfe’s “Cold” and the Continuing Evolution of America’s Desolation Blues

There is a core element to Chelsea Wolfe’s music—a kind of urgent spin on America’s desolation blues—that’s existed throughout the entirety of her career. It’s the thread running from the dusty, haunted corners of her early acoustic work straight through to the heavy, electronic-tinged goth-rock she’s known for today.

With her new single, “Cold”—the lead track off her upcoming ninth album, The Dark (due August 21 via Loma Vista Recordings)—Wolfe dials back the volume just enough to look that desolation dead in the eye.

Inside “Cold”: The Sound of Letting Go

The track starts out sparse and muted, leaning entirely on folk textures. An acoustic guitar sets a lonely pace, paired with distant piano chords that feel like they’re coming from another room. Facing the Ghosts on The Dark

For this record, Wolfe teamed up with longtime partner Ben Chisholm alongside co-writer Jennifer Decilveo. The Dark is shaping up to be a heavily collaborative project, bringing in guest players like Robin Finck from Nine Inch Nails, Matt Chamberlain, Troy Van Leeuwen of Queens of the Stone Age, Stella Mozgawa, and Justin Meldal-Johnsen.

Even with that powerhouse lineup, “Cold” proves that Wolfe’s most powerful tool is still her restraint. Talking about where her head’s at for this album, she’s mentioned a shift toward taking accountability instead of just pointing fingers:

“The ghosts are haunted by the living just as much as the living are haunted by the ghosts… I’m not pointing the finger at anyone. I’m taking responsibility.”

It’s a mature evolution of her usual dark Americana—less about wallowing in the dark and more about figuring out how to live in it.

Directed by Magdalena Wosinska, the video for “Cold” leans right into the song’s occult-folk vibe. It features Wolfe and a small group gathered around a candlelit séance, perfectly matching the theme of dragging our hidden fears out into the light. It’s moody, beautiful, and fits the music like a glove.
