Porter Robinson and Ninajirachi Finally Drop “WannaCry”—and It Was Worth the Wait

If you’ve been anywhere near a dance festival or scrolling through electronic music TikTok over the last few months, you’ve definitely heard the ID. Fans have been losing their minds over it since it first started popping up in live sets.

The wait is officially over. Australian producer Ninajirachi and electronic icon Porter Robinson have finally dropped their collaborative single, “WannaCry”.

It’s a glistening, high-energy trance-pop track that comes with a pretty wild backstory, making it one of the most exciting electronic releases of the year.

A Full-Circle Moment a Decade in the Making

For Ninajirachi (Nina Wilson), this collaboration is basically the ultimate career milestone. More than ten years ago, she was just a teenager attending her very first concert: Porter Robinson playing at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney.

Fast forward to today, and the tables have turned. After crossing paths while touring in the US, Robinson ended up asking her if she wanted to jam in the studio. Over just a couple of days, the two built “WannaCry” from a lead melody Porter had lying around, bridging two generations of boundary-pushing computer music producers.

Romance, But Make It Ransomware

True to its name, the song borrows its moniker from the infamous 2017 global cyberattack. But instead of just writing a song about computer doom, the duo turned the concept on its head.

According to the artists, the lyrics are written from the perspective of the actual WannaCry virus. It’s a fictitious, slightly unhinged take on software trying to spread as far as it possibly can, equating digital infection to an all-consuming, desperate romance. Lines like “I’ve got a charm, I wanna put it on your heart” lean heavily into that campy, high-definition internet aesthetic both artists do so well.

What Does It Actually Sound Like?

If you loved the emotive punch of Porter’s older work combined with Ninajirachi’s crisp, hyper-detailed production style (I Love My Computer), “WannaCry” hits that exact sweet spot.

It’s a throbbing, fast-paced trance track driven by sharp, shimmering synth textures and massive emotional vocal hooks. It sounds just as good blasting through festival speakers at Coachella or EDC as it does through a pair of headphones on a late-night drive.
