Tove Lo Turns Babysitting a Drunk Friend Into Pop Perfection on New Single “DNH”
We’ve all been there: you head out for a night of dancing, only to spend the next three hours nursing a club soda, holding a coat, and keeping an eye on a friend who has officially crossed the line from fun to entirely unhinged.
If you need a soundtrack for that exact brand of nocturnal chaos, Tove Lo has you covered.
The Swedish pop icon is back with “DNH”, the latest taste of her upcoming sixth studio album, ESTRUS (due out September 18 via Pretty Swede Records/Virgin Music Group). True to form, Tove Lo takes a messy, deeply relatable moment and flips it into a razor-sharp electro-pop earworm.
The Story Behind “DNH”
Co-written by Tove Lo alongside Ludvig Söderberg and Tim Nelson, “DNH” pairs a driving, nocturnal beat with her signature unfiltered storytelling. The track tackles the universal push-and-pull of loyalty and pure exhaustion when you’re stuck playing unpaid babysitter on a Friday night.
In the chorus, she cuts right to the chase with lyrics like:
“You’re drunk and horny in the crowd / You need attention, let your tears come down / You crying harder, kick us out / You’re still my best friend when you ruin my night.”
It’s cheeky, self-aware, and completely devoid of the usual pop sugar-coating. Tove Lo has always made a career out of owning her flaws and awkward social moments, and “DNH” feels like a page torn straight out of a late-night group chat.
Building Up to ESTRUS
“DNH” follows a killer run of momentum for Tove Lo, arriving on the heels of her collaboration “des fleurs” with Stromae and the bold lead-up single “I’m your girl right?”
She’s described ESTRUS as an exploration of raw instincts and emotional contradictions—essentially an album built around “a lot of feelings, no solutions.” Recorded across Los Angeles, Stockholm, and a quiet Swedish fishing village, the 13-track project is shaping up to be her most honest era yet.
Fans recently got a sneak peek into the world of the new record during A NIGHT IN ESTRUS, an exclusive preview event at Warsaw in Brooklyn featuring secret listening sessions and late-night DJ sets alongside guests like SG Lewis.
