DIIV Takes a Sharp Pop Turn on “The Fountain” (Produced by A.G. Cook)

DIIV are back, and they are definitely not repeating themselves. The band has just dropped “The Fountain” a surprisingly sharp and immediate single that introduces their fifth studio album, ZIRP!, landing October 30 via Fantasy Records.

If Frog In Boiling Water found the band deep in their signature brooding, immersive shoegaze waters, “The Fountain” shakes things up. It’s got that familiar, gorgeous haze of guitars and atmospheric vocals, but it’s anchored by a punchier, undeniable pop pulse that feels entirely fresh for them.

The big talking point here—aside from the song itself—is the production. DIIV teamed up with A.G. Cook, the PC Music mastermind and longtime architect behind boundary-pushing pop from artists like Charli XCX. Bringing Cook into the fold might sound like an unexpected mix on paper, but in practice, it works. Instead of burying DIIV in digital production, Cook’s touch helps sharpen their organic instrumentation, giving the guitars and rhythm section a crisp, modern clarity without losing an ounce of grit.

As for the album title itself, ZIRP!—shorthand for “zero interest rate policies”—points toward the band’s continued knack for wrapping sharp cultural commentary into their work, tackling everything from algorithmic fatigue to modern capitalism.
