What’s the Story Behind “Katy Bar the Door”?

Borrowing its title from the classic idiom for impending trouble—the moment when everyone realizes things are about to go sideways—the new single captures that exact feeling of watching the world spin a bit off its axis.

Frontman Tim McIlrath put the track together after witnessing heavy-handed ICE raids in Minneapolis, turning that raw frustration into a broader reflection on power, corruption, and history repeating itself.

“This is not the first time in history we have reckoned with abuses of power,” McIlrath noted. “Bearing witness to the fragility of democracy is a scary thing, and it demands a response.”

Musically, it hits all the right notes for longtime fans. Recorded back at Colorado’s legendary Blasting Room, it fuses old-school punk speed with that heavy, post-hardcore punch the band does so well.

Released alongside the main track, “Living Undercover” takes a slightly different angle.
