Tough Cookie’s New Single “Mercy!” Is Raw, Heavy, and Unflinching
If you thought you had the underground alt-rock scene figured out, Tough Cookie is here to shake things up.
Following the buzz of their mixtape The Countryside Is Good For You, the London-based four-piece is back with “Mercy!” It’s heavy, sharp, and proof that the band is hitting a thrilling new stride.
Inside the Track
From the opening notes, “Mercy!” pulls you right into the chaos. Jagged guitars collide with a relentless rhythm section, building tension until the song completely opens up.
Frontperson August anchors the track with a vocal performance that feels urgent and unfiltered. As the band puts it, the song is “about dealing with the initial blow of a life-changing experience, and meeting someone in the wreckage before you’ve managed to make sense of things.”
That feeling of paralysis—staring up at the ceiling while your world shifts—inspired the single’s artwork: a striking oil painting of a static ceiling fan by August.
The DIY Roots
Tough Cookie kept things close to home for this release. “Mercy!” was recorded down in the band’s rehearsal space, tucked away in the basement of a London church.
Comprising August (vocals/lyrics), Jess (guitar), Gavin (drums), and Dan (bass), the band worked from a self-made manifesto to nail down their vision before hitting record. That intentionality shines through, tying the music, the artwork, and the DIY ethos into one cohesive package.
What’s Next?
With headline shows at spots like MOTH Club and The Sebright Arms under their belt, Tough Cookie is building serious momentum. “Mercy!” is just the first taste of what’s to come.
