Tyler Ballgame’s “Live It Down” Is a Masterclass in Self-Deprecating Indie-Folk
If you’ve been tracking indie-folk over the last couple of years, Tyler Ballgame’s name probably rings a bell. Following his debut album For the First Time, Again—and some heavy-hitting tour runs with acts like The Lumineers and Alabama Shakes—he’s back with a brand new single called “Live It Down”
It’s an absolute earworm, but more than that, it’s a funny and remarkably honest look at what happens when you turn your personal life into public art.
The Studio Setup: Real Gear, Real Quirks
True to his style, Ballgame kept things warm and organic in the studio. For this track, he teamed up with producers Jonathan Rado (Weyes Blood, Foxygen) and Ryan Pollie (Los Angeles Police Department).
They didn’t rely on sterile plug-ins here. Instead, you get a wonderfully tactile mix of sounds:
-
Zither tape loops that add a hazy, nostalgic blur.
-
Actual mic’d-up furniture being played as percussion.
-
A rock-solid rhythm section featuring drummer Amy Aileen Wood (Fiona Apple) and bassist Wayne Whittaker, giving the whole thing a bouncy, soulful pulse.
What’s the Song Actually About?
Lyrically, “Live It Down” is essentially a cheeky break-up song that turns the microscope right back on the songwriter.
Ballgame calls it a middle finger of a track, but instead of blaming an ex, he’s poking fun at himself for exploiting his own life for material. As he puts it, it’s a bit like John Lennon’s old quote about writing songs about people—ultimately, it’s always about attacking yourself.
When that pre-chorus hits with the line, “Whatcha gonna write about now?”, you can’t help but grin at the self-awareness. It’s sharp, funny, and completely disarming.

Alongside the single, there’s a vibrant visualizer by Jayla Smith that captures the loose, creative energy of the sessions.
