Known to some as an electronic pop band and to others as an alternative dance outfit—. Bimbim Slank says, “They’re like Down under band INXS”—PopOut was formed in Jakarta by two old friends and alumni of the Jalan Potlot community, Massto Sidharta (vocals + Music Programming + drums) and Ario Bayu Putro (guitar + Music programming). The duo started jamming together in 2012, melding influences like Depeche Mode, Stereo MC’s, Dan Reed Network, U2, EMF, and Chemical Brothers with a keen sense for carrying a song through the rhythm—both Massto and Ario are best known as drummers. In PopOut, the two step out from behind the kit to take on new instruments and experiment with a variety of audio software to create their unique sound.
