Caroline Rose Serves Up Suburban Dread and Slapstick Melodrama on New Single “Chow Mein”

Fishtailing across a trimmed sod lawn, tearing through the asphalt expanse of a box-store strip mall, and idling in a fast-food drive-thru—this is the hyperreal Americana landscape that calls Caroline Rose (she/they) home.

The shape-shifting artist is back with a brilliant new preview single, “Chow Mein” pulled from their upcoming studio album, Gentling the Horse at the Walt Whitman Mall.

If you’ve been following Rose’s trajectory from the pastel-hued pop subversion of Loner to the gut-wrenching vulnerability of The Art of Forgetting, “Chow Mein” proves that their knack for finding the surreal within the mundane has only gotten sharper.

Inside the World of “Chow Mein”

The track balances menace and slapstick comedy, capturing that excruciating, all-too-relatable human impulse of trying desperately to act cool and fit in while your entire reality unravels.

As Rose vividly puts it in the track:

“A bouncer at the door / He asks for the password / I’m already drunk cause I / Can’t afford a cocktail / I pause before I throw up all over his tailored suit.”

“A lot of my songs I think of as scenes in a movie,” Rose shares. “I relate to characters who are a little strange, who are outsiders, who seem to fuck up a lot or find themselves in awkward situations. Most of these stories are just pulled directly from scenes in my own life… This is a story about trying too hard to be cool and act normal, but everything is going wrong.”

Whether you’re spinning “Chow Mein” with the windows rolled down in a strip-mall parking lot or diving headfirst into the cinematic universe of the new record, Caroline Rose remains one of the most vital, unpredictably brilliant voices in modern alternative pop.
