Shygirl is shaking things up again. After spending the last year deep in Club Shy territory, she’s just dropped “Alyse” and it’s a massive gear shift.

Co-produced alongside Karma Kid and JD Reid, the track ditches the glossy, high-gloss club pop for something much grittier. Shygirl has talked about wanting to chase that visceral, wide-eyed feeling she got hearing The Prodigy’s “Firestarter” as a kid—and you can really hear that raw, late-90s industrial pulse bleeding through the production.

It starts out with tense strings before opening up into heavy breakbeats, abrasive bass distortion, and sharp guitar riffs. Beneath the noise, though, it’s weirdly romantic. She floats between spoken-word delivery and sweeping, vulnerable lines like, “Spread my arms wide / Fall into yours / Sink into love / Forever.” Even cooler? The bridge features a surprise vocal cameo from her partner, George Smale.

True to form, the accompanying music video—directed by Francesco Loy Bell and Oliver Bell from a script she co-wrote with Smale—plays out like a gritty 90s crime short-film. It’s tense, cinematic, and contrasts sharply with the deep-seated devotion in the song’s lyrics.

With a stack of European festival dates on the horizon, “Alyse” feels like a statement piece. She’s wiping the slate clean and proving she can pivot wherever she wants.
