Paris Paloma Trades Female Rage for Vulnerability on New Single “I Cry in Front of Paintings”

Ever since “Labour” struck a global nerve, Paris Paloma has been hailed as a voice for fierce, righteous anger. But her newest release, “I Cry in Front of Paintings” shows a completely different side of the British singer-songwriter—one that is tender, introspective, and achingly vulnerable.

Serving as the final pre-release single from her upcoming sophomore album, The Fatal Flaw (dropping September 4 via Nettwerk Music Group), this track proves that Paris is just as powerful when she’s whispering as she is when she’s roaring.

The Story Behind the Song

If singles like “Miyazaki” and “Pre-Raphaelite” built a world of literary and artistic nods, “I Cry in Front of Paintings” grounds those themes in a very real, human realization. Paris has described the track as a “slow step into gentleness”—acting as the emotional closer to an album that wrestles with self-discovery.

She unpacked the heart of the song by looking back:

“When I was 17, I stood in front of a Rothko painting, not knowing why I couldn’t cry in front of it like other people did. At 23, I stood in front of a lover, and didn’t know why I couldn’t love them how I wanted to… ‘I Cry in Front of Paintings’ is the relief of emotional epiphany, where you find love, you find understanding, just not where you thought or expected.”

Rather than another breakup anthem, it’s a song about finally figuring out how to let yourself be loved—and realizing you actually deserve the safety and gentleness that comes with it.

Art, Myth, and Lyrical Depth

Paris has a rare gift for weaving high art and classical mythology into modern pop without it feeling forced. Here, she uses a real-life moment of feeling emotionally blocked in front of a Rothko piece as a mirror for romantic hesitation.

The lyricism plays subtly with classic tropes, even nodding to the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Instead of a grand, tragic sweep, she hones in on the everyday terror of loving someone so much that you’re terrified of messing it up. It’s the musical equivalent of that classic literary confession: loving someone too deeply to easily put it into words.

The Sound and the Visual

Co-written and co-produced alongside Chloe Kraemer, the song skips the overproduced gloss in favor of an organic, breathing sonic landscape. Kraemer’s drums and keys blend with lush string arrangements by Eleonore Denig and subtle timpani hits from Tristan Fry, giving the track a theatrical, timeless weight.

The music video, directed by Phoebe Fox, matches that intimacy. With Paris entirely on her own, looking straight into the lens, it strips away all the noise and lets her incredible vocals carry the weight of the song.

The Countdown to The Fatal Flaw

With “I Cry in Front of Paintings” out in the world, the stage is officially set for The Fatal Flaw to arrive on September 4.

Whether you’ve been following her since the viral days of “Labour,” catching her recent festival sets, or watching her stunning live lounge covers, Paris Paloma is carving out a lane entirely her own.
