Getdown Services Deliver Anarchic Pop Brilliance with “Lentils”
If you’re tired of indie bands taking themselves way too seriously, Getdown Services are the antidote. Comprising childhood best friends Josh Law and Ben Sadler—who first crossed paths at school in Minehead, Somerset, before setting up camp in Bristol—the duo have quietly built a reputation as one of the sharpest, most unpredictable acts in the UK underground.
After winning over a fiercely loyal following with their debut album, Crisps (released back on November 9, 2023, through Breakfast Records), the pair have returned with their sophomore full-length, Massive Champion. Tucked neatly inside its 13 tracks is a standout moment that’s been turning heads: “Lentils”.
From Somerset Roots to Bristol Beats
Law and Sadler’s creative partnership feels deeply rooted in a shared sense of geography and everyday British absurdism. Growing up in Minehead and eventually settling in Bristol gave their music a distinct flavor—one that pulls just as much inspiration from local detritus and memories of youth as it does from driving, danceable rhythms.
When Crisps dropped via independent mainstay Breakfast Records, it proved they weren’t just a flash in the pan. Now, with Massive Champion, they’ve widened the goalposts, keeping the scrappy, DIY ethos intact while leaning into a left-field pop sound that feels entirely their own.
Inside “Lentils”: Subversive Pop with a Bulbous Head
“Lentils” finds Getdown Services firing on all cylinders, blending wry social commentary with an undeniable groove. The track kicks off with a disarming intro that sets the tone immediately:
“I’ve got a buzz cut. Bulbous head. Not for the style…”
Musically, it’s a brilliant contradiction—infectious pop hooks colliding with a punkish, stream-of-consciousness delivery. It’s funny, jittery, and impossibly catchy all at once. It’s that exact knack for pairing proper songwriting craft with absolute irreverence that has earned them love from BBC 6 Music, tastemaker press, and sweaty rooms full of fans across the country.
Catch Them While You Can
Getdown Services are very much a band that needs to be witnessed in the flesh to be fully understood—whether that’s headlining packed venues or playing to an eclectic crowd consisting of a bloke, a bong, and a dog in a leaky French barn (a formative early gig that cemented their ‘play anywhere, to anyone’ philosophy).
