Billy Strings Drops Poignant New Single “Mill Town Flood” From Upcoming Album So Much For Goodbyes

Grammy-winning bluegrass wizard Billy Strings is giving us another taste of his next chapter. Following the release of the brooding single “Burn the Other End,” Strings just dropped “Mill Town Flood” the latest preview from his upcoming 16-track album, So Much For Goodbyes.

Set to land on August 28 via Reprise Records, this record is shaping up to be one of the most raw, personal, and defining moments of his career so far.

Inside “Mill Town Flood” and So Much For Goodbyes

Co-produced by Strings alongside legendary producer T Bone Burnett, So Much For Goodbyes came together during a really heavy period of personal loss. The entire 16-track project serves as a heartfelt tribute to the memory of his late mother, Debra Apostol.

Talking about what drove him to make this record, Strings opened up:

“I made this record to honor my mother. To notice and embrace this very significant period of grief in my life and make art from it. To turn my heartbreak into songs while using my guitar as a coping mechanism as I always have. It’s always been there for me to lean on through the hard times, and I figure it always will…until it’s my time to say goodbye.”

You can feel that vulnerability in the music. “Mill Town Flood” pairs his trademark, jaw-dropping picking with storytelling that hits right in the chest, proving once again that he’s so much more than just a fast picker—he’s a master songwriter. Plus, the album features original visual art created by his mother, tying her legacy right into the heart of the project.

Keeping things top-tier for sound quality, the records were plated and pressed at Paramount Pressing & Plating out in Denver, with the vinyl lacquers cut by Jeff Powell over at Take Out Vinyl in Memphis.
