Sam Smith is back with something special. Following up on their lead single “My Guy,” they’ve just dropped “Oh Mother” the second taste of their upcoming fifth studio album, Hazel Eyes.

If you loved Sam’s more stripped-back, emotional roots, you’re going to appreciate this one. Recorded at New York’s legendary Electric Lady Studios, “Oh Mother” trades glossy dance beats for organic instrumentation, cinematic strings, and soaring gospel-infused harmonies.

Co-produced by Sam alongside David Odlum and Simon Aldred, the song features the TwoCity Chorus and guest backing vocals from Dante, giving the track an immense, wall-of-sound energy. It starts with a heavy piano progression and builds into a dramatic call-and-response between Sam’s signature vocals and the choir.

The Inspiration Behind the Choir

“The choir is meant to represent the fury of a mother witnessing her child’s betrayal — they’re summoning a sort of divine feminine energy,” Sam shared.

That energy bleeds through on the chorus, where Sam belts out:

What’s Next for Sam Smith?

“Oh Mother” is just a preview of Hazel Eyes, which officially lands on August 21 via Capitol Records. The 12-track album promises to be a deeply organic project, featuring collaborations with artists like Feist and string arrangements by Rob Moose.
