Mastodon Drop Crushing New Single “Snakes for Dinner” Ahead of New Album Marrow Deep

Atlanta’s Mastodon have long been one of the most fiercely original and influential American metal bands to appear in the 21st century. Their wide-angle progressive approach has always refused to stay in one lane, effortlessly welding together stoner and sludge metal, punishing hardcore, neo-psych, death metal, and everything in between.

Now, they’re gearing up for their next chapter. The band just dropped a massive new single called “Snakes for Dinner” giving fans another taste of what’s to come on their ninth studio album, Marrow Deep, which drops August 28 via Loma Vista Recordings.

What’s the Vibe on “Snakes for Dinner”?

Following last month’s single “Your Ghost Again,” “Snakes for Dinner” is a heavy, winding trip that hits all the right notes for longtime fans while pushing the band’s sonic boundaries even further.

Even better, the track features a stellar guest appearance from Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, who drops in on vocals. It’s a full-circle moment for fans who remember Homme’s iconic cameo on “Colony of Birchmen” off Blood Mountain back in 2006. With down-tuned riffs, soaring dual-vocal harmonies, and an intoxicatingly hypnotic rhythm section, “Snakes for Dinner” bridges the gap between raw sludge aggression and Mastodon’s signature melodic maturity.

Inside Marrow Deep

Arriving five years after their massive double-album Hushed and Grim, Marrow Deep is easily one of the most anticipated and emotionally charged releases of the year. The 12-track record marks their first full-length project following the tragic passing of founding guitarist Brent Hinds.

Conceptually built around the Three Fates of Greek mythology, the album digs deep into themes of resilience, loss, and destiny. Founding members Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders, and Bill Kelliher channel years of real-life turbulence into some of the most resonant, heavy-hitting music of their career.

  • Release Date: August 28

  • Lineup: Features new guitarist Nick Johnston alongside longtime collaborator and keyboardist João Nogueira.

  • Production: Co-produced by the band at their Atlanta hub, West End Sound, alongside Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou, with mixing by Andrew Scheps.

Hit the Road: The Poisonous Weapons Tour

To celebrate the release of Marrow Deep, Mastodon are heading back out on the road this fall for The Poisonous Weapons Tour. The North American run kicks off in Orlando, Florida, on September 16, with killer support lined up from Deafheaven and Alcest.

As Troy Sanders puts it, the band is stepping onto this next phase with a renewed spark and hunger that feels just like the old days:

“Bill, Brann, and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this, and we’ve got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us. That’s a magical feeling that makes us keep wanting to go to band practice.”
