Daydreamers Just Called Everyone Out with “I Expect Better”

Let’s be real: we’ve all had those weeks where everything feels like a mounting pile of “nope.” That’s exactly where the new Daydreamers single, “I Expect Better” lives.

While the London four-piece usually leans into that nostalgic, “main character” indie-pop sound, their latest drop feels a lot more grounded. It’s less about the fantasy and more about the frustration of reaching your breaking point and finally saying, “Yeah, this isn’t good enough.”

The “Beautiful Disaster” Vibe

Frontman Riley hasn’t been shy about the fact that this song was born out of a total rut. It wasn’t written in some high-end studio session with ten co-writers; it was a “brain dump” during a period of burnout. That’s probably why it feels so sticky—you can hear the impulsiveness in the track. They actually kept about 90% of the original demo for the final release, which explains why it feels less “processed” than their earlier stuff.

Why It Hits Different

If you’re a fan of The 1975 or Bleachers, you’ll recognize the DNA here, but Daydreamers are doing something slightly grittier:

  • The Contrast: It’s a classic “sad lyrics, happy beat” situation. You could easily blast this on a summer drive, but if you actually listen to the words, it’s pretty bleak. It’s that specific feeling of being stressed out while the sun is shining.

  • The Band Dynamic: You can actually hear the chemistry between Aurora, Jay, and Marco. It feels like a band playing in a room, not just a producer clicking buttons on a laptop.

  • The DIY Visuals: The music video is a chaotic fever dream. Forget the high-fashion indie tropes—this one has green screens, random screenshots, and goats. It’s self-deprecating and fun, which is exactly the energy the industry needs right now.

The Verdict

Daydreamers have already proven they can go viral, but “I Expect Better” proves they can stay relevant. It’s an anthem for anyone who is tired of settling—whether that’s in a relationship, a job, or just with themselves.
