Chasing Sunbeams & Writing Heartbreak: The Story Behind My New Single ‘Vices’
If you’ve been following my journey since American Idol Season 21, you know that I’m a firm believer in keeping it real. Whether I’m standing on a stage in front of celebrity judges or sitting in my backyard under the golden Northern California sun, my music has always been my truth.
Today, I am so beyond excited to finally share my latest project with you: my brand-new pop single, “Vices.”
The Paradox of “Happy Human, Sad Songs”
There’s a bit of a running joke in my circle: I’m a mostly happy person who writes mostly not-happy tunes. There is something so cathartic about taking those heavy, complicated emotions—the ones we usually try to hide—and pairing them with a beat that makes you want to move.
“Vices” lives right in that sweet spot. It’s a song about the things we lean on when life gets messy. It’s about the habits, the people, and the moments we use to escape, even when we know they might not be the best for us.
Why Nor-Cal Inspiration Hits Different
Living under the warm Nor-Cal sun provides the perfect backdrop for my songwriting process. There’s a specific kind of “sun-drenched melancholy” that comes from writing heartbreak songs while looking at a beautiful horizon.
I think that contrast is what makes “Vices” feel so unique. It has that West Coast pop energy, but the lyrics dive deep into the grit of the human experience. It’s the perfect track for:
-
Windows-down highway drives.
-
Processing a “situationship” that went south.
-
Realizing you’re human and allowed to have flaws.
A Note to My Idol Family
To everyone who supported me during my time on American Idol, thank you for sticking around. That experience was just the prologue. This—the independent music, the raw lyrics, the creative control—is where the real story begins.
“Vices” isn’t just a song; it’s an invitation to join me on this new journey. I’m leaning into my sound, embracing my “mostly happy” self, and turning my “not-so-happy” thoughts into something we can all sing along to.
“We all have our vices. This song is just mine.” — Sara Beth
