Colors Of Resistance
Eco-Music Big Band
The Eco-Music Big Band is proud to debut COLORS OF RESISTANCE in an exclusive, two-night performance in two of New York Cityโs most vital music venues of lower Manhattan. Fusing the classic works of virtuosic free jazz with the freshest voices in big band composition, COLORS OF RESISTANCE is a program that includes the iconic and unreleased works by the late composer and baritone saxophone virtuoso Fred Ho, new works by up-and-coming New York jazz composers Livio Almeida, Marie Incontrera, Albert Marques, and Zack OโFarrill, and works by overlooked composer/activist Cal Massey, who was a life-long friend of and influence to John Coltrane. Featuring the legendary bass trombonist David Taylor and tenor trombonist David Whitwell in dynamic and specially composed solo concerti, and special guest bass trombonist Felix Del Tredici, this program celebrates these three radical brass improvisers whose groundbreaking work forges a new avant-garde tradition for their instrument.
COLORS OF RESISTANCE tells a joyful story of music that comes from the tradition of resistance to oppression: fusing virtuosic radical jazz with hip hop, heavy metal, Latin rhythms, and blues forms, the Eco-Music Big Band promises a one-of-a-kind experience that intends to propel the jazz idiom into the 21st century. The title of this program was conceived during bandleader Marie Incontreraโs final conversation with the bandโs founder (and her long-time mentor) Fred Ho before his death in April 2014, in which Mr. Ho said โall the colors of resistanceโฆ all the colors of lifeโฆ hold themโฆโ. This program is both a tribute to Mr. Ho and his legacy, and a transcendence of his vision with daring and exciting new works by young composers.
The Eco-Music Big Band is a 16-piece, multigenerational and unique big band that includes some of the nationโs most acclaimed jazz musicians (such as saxophonist Jay Rodriguez, bass trombonist David Taylor, drummer Zack OโFarrill, and trumpeter Adam OโFarrill). Hailed as โโฆmusic and activism at its finestโ (DooBeeDooBeeDoo), the Eco-Music Big Band regularly commissions works by younger and emerging composers, and performs music with a vision for a better world. The band also performs the exclusive repertoire of the music of its late founder, Fred Ho, and the 1970s jazz composer and bandleader Cal Massey. The Eco-Music Big Band has performed on respected stages throughout the New York area such as the Blue Note Jazz Club, Red Roosterโs Ginnyโs Supper Club, Joeโs Pub at the Public Theater, Zinc Jazz Club, BAMcafe, and Roulette; and on the national scale throughout Vermont and Philadelphia.
