The song is about the difference between inner and outer voices – how you think when you’re by yourself versus the way you act with your friends. In this case – a boy’s relationship to a girl, portrayed from both perspectives. He’s all vulnerable when he’s in his own mind thinking of her, though acting all toughened up and superficial when with his friends.
