It Ain’t Easy is Mama Cleo’s most recent release dropped on 6.26.20, and boy, does it capture #2020 in a song.
This jazz-y tune that incorporates elements of hiphop and gospel chronicles the pain that has plagued humanity for all of time. One of the only things we all have in common is the struggle of life. Life is tragic and full of pain. For some of us more than others, but we all suffer amidst smaller moments of joy.
Mama Cleo is the daughter of immigrants from Latin America and has spent her life fighting to become who she is today. This song is dedicated to everyone who struggles and overcomes to have a better life. It is also released one year after the tragic passing of her cousin Kevin in a police altercation.
We live and strive for those who cannot. What we need is more empathy, union, and understanding. We are all in this together.
