Leon Lieffijn (Interview)

Hi! My name is Leon Lieffijn, a 22-year-old singer/songwriter and producer from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I’ve released lots of new music this year and my plan is to release even more in the near future (with an album coming up next month). My goal with my music is to reach people’s hearts and hopefully encourage people with a message of hope. I try to do so by being active on social media as well and encouraging my followers there with whatever they’re going through.

Where are you from?

I’m from Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

How long have you been making music?

Basically all of my life – my parents wanted me to start taking piano and music lessons when I was about 5 years old, that’s when it all started.

How many songs /albums have you released to date?

So far I’ve released one EP and 4 singles, with much more to come in the near future.

Can you tell us about your latest release and the background and inspirations behind it?

My latest release is “Let It Be” (September 12, 2018), my own version of the famous song by The Beatles. The song means a lot to me since I went to quite some difficult stuff in the past and sometimes the best thing you can do is do nothing, go through it and just “let it be”. I also really like the melody and emotion of the song and I tried to capture my own feelings in this version.

How have you ended up in the music industry?

More or less step by step. When I was about 10 years old I started recording my own music with Garageband.
From then on I started releasing music on SoundCloud and it got more professional and serious as the years went by.

What do you think of the music industry in 2018?

I think it is a very difficult industry with lots of competitors, but I believe it has always been that way. I think the real difference with for example 50 years ago is that music can now be released by everyone and with streaming platforms as Spotify and Apple Music you really have to keep running the race if you don’t want to fall behind.

Who do you think the most influential artist?

Who have you collaborated with so far in your career?

Many people. I always try to work together with other artists, songwriters and musicians so I won’t get stuck in doing the same thing over and over. So far I’ve collaborated with several lyricists, artists, musicians and songwriters from all over the world.

How do you think you differ from other artists?

Although I’m sure there are other artists with the same mindset as me as well, I think the main difference between me and other artists is that I’m not doing all of this to get famous or get a #1 hit (it would be nice however!). With my music and the reach that I have I try to be a light for people in what can be a very dark world and hopefully spread a message of love and hope that will resonate with people’s hearts.

Dead or alive, who would be your dream collaboration?

That would probably be either Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic) or Michael W. Smith. I’ve been listening to the music of Smith my entire life and he is a huge inspiration. So is Tedder, who writes amazing songs for lots and lots of amazing artists such as Adele and U2.

What was the first album you bought?

I think that was “Stand” by Michael W. Smith.

What’s your favourite song at the moment?

I’m a huge fan of “Surrounded (Fight My Battles)” by Michael W. Smith (as you can see I listen to his music a lot!). The song is very simple, but so powerful and encouraging. I love it.

What other hobbies or interests do you have?

Besides my music I work as a designer.

Tell us more about your upcoming project or this new project?

Next month my new instrumental album “Patience” will be released. All songs are inspired by things I recently went through in my life and I truly hope the music will encourage, help and/or inspire others. The last track of the album, “One Step At A Time”, will have vocals (even though it’s an instrumental album) and I worked together with some amazing artists for that one. Can’t wait to release it!

What’s in the pipeline after this project?

A lot! I have plans to release a couple more singles later this year and I will release even more music next year, with a couple of EP’s and/or albums in the pipeline. I’m just getting started…

Thank you for your time and may you carry on making great, fresh music.

Thanks a lot, I definitely will!
