TWO NEW FUNKY CHUNKS OF JAZZTRONICA FROM FORMER DIGABLE PLANETS BASSIST

The Gold Note Singles Club is entering just its second month, and it’s already gone off the rails.

In July, bassist, producer, and Gold Note Records CEO Alan Goldsher announced he’d deliver one new song on the first day of each month.

On August 1, he dropped two.

Oops.

“Couldn’t be helped,” he shrugged. “When a beat calls, I answer, release schedules be damned.”

Good thing he took the call, because “The Boogoo Reboot” is one of Goldsher’s finest tracks to date. The Chicago-based studio wizard melded Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, Flying Lotus and Thundercat, creating a booty-shaking, thought-provoking jam that fits into multiple musical buckets: jazz, funk, EDM, electronica.

Like all the tunes from the Gold Note Singles Club, “The Boogoo Reboot” is short and to the point. “Listen, there’s a place in the jazz canon for quickies,” Goldsher says. “I’m down to listen to side two of ‘Bitches Brew’ any day of the week, but there’s something to be said for a three-minute cut that slams, then ends.

Goldsher has been busy in 2020, having released an album, an EP, and four singles. “I have a ton of stuff out in the marketplace,” Goldsher smiles, “so next month, I promise to drop only one single…maybe.”
